Moving from High Performance Driving Education (HPDE) events or lapping days to racing is, well, exhilarating! I personally believe that it was one of the best things I ever did to embrace my passion for driving and for self-development. This is a follow up from last week’s article from another racer's point of view
As a quick recap, I made the suggestion that when studying your own performance using data capture systems, you needed to use your own approach. I presented my personal formula: What was happening (what lap was faster); Why it was happening (which lap was faster or slower in a particular part of the track); and finally, How it was happening (what was the driver doing to make this happen).
For the purposes of this article (and next week’s, as the topic is so lengthy that we’re breaking it up into two), let’s take a look at that last sentence a little more, in particular the last few words “… as often as I can.” The challenge with coaching is that despite being worth every single penny, it’s expensive - something very few can do often, a number can do every now and again and, for many, something that may never be available to them.
